World Environment Day – Gharyan University 2025 Theme: "Overcoming Plastic Pollution"

On the morning of Monday, June 16, 2025, an event was held at the Science College Theater, Gharyan University, to celebrate World Environment Day. The event was jointly organized by Tamkeen for Community Development, the Science College at Gharyan University, and the Gharyan Environmental Affairs Authority, with generous sponsorship from Gharyan University.


The event began with opening speeches from the organizers, including the university president and the dean of the Science College, emphasizing the importance of environmental awareness and the role of academic and community institutions in addressing plastic pollution.


Outstanding scientific contributions were presented by students and faculty members from various scientific departments, including:

- Environmental Science and Natural Resources Department

- Chemistry Department

- Botany Department

- Zoology Department

- Geology Department


Additionally, Tamkeen Organization, Tech Spark, Al-Barari Organization, and the Environmental Affairs Authority delivered valuable presentations, highlighting awareness and technological initiatives aimed at reducing plastic dependency and promoting sustainable solutions.


With the participation of students, academics, environmental activists, and civil society representatives, the event concluded with an extensive discussion session featuring representatives from scientific departments, allowing for open debate with attendees, fostering a participatory and interactive atmosphere.


The event resulted in the following recommendations:

1. Incorporating plastic pollution topics into university activities and relevant courses.

2. Strengthening collaboration between the university and civil society to organize ongoing environmental awareness campaigns.

3. Encouraging scientific research on plastic pollution and its impact on soil and the environment.

4. Launching recycling initiatives within the university and local community.

5. Reducing the use of single-use plastics in educational institutions and public facilities.

6. Supporting student innovation in waste reduction and resource conversion.


At the end of the celebration, certificates of appreciation were distributed to all participants and collaborators in recognition of their distinguished efforts and contributions to the success of this significant environmental event.
